Chaparral (organic)

Description

Chaparral (Larrea tridentata), commonly known as the creosote bush, is a resilient desert shrub native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico that is deeply rooted in traditional Native American medicine.

Preclinical, test-tube studies demonstrate that its most abundant active compound—a potent lignin called nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA)—possesses remarkably high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In historical folk practices, topical chaparral oils and tinctures have been heavily utilised to soothe external skin conditions, accelerate wound healing, and calm localised joint discomfort.

However, despite these strong laboratory and traditional attributes, modern medical authorities and regulatory bodies like the FDA and Health Canada strongly warn against swallowing or ingesting chaparral. Clinical evidence shows that when consumed internally, NDGA is heavily hepatotoxic, presenting a severe, documented risk of acute hepatitis, permanent kidney damage, and severe liver failure.

Therefore, while chaparral remains highly valued for external and ritual applications, internal supplementation should be strictly avoided to ensure safety.
